Immersive display technique of loitering munition control station for urban combat environments

Abstract:

In many recent local wars, such as the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the loitering munition is paid more attention because of the battlefield advantages of mobility and flexibility, precision strikes, etc.However, the use of loitering munition in the urban environment is vulnerable to the obstruction of various buildings, which affects the operator's judgment of the battlefield and the accurate control of the loitering munition. In order to enable operators to quickly grasp the mission environment in large-scale complex urban combat scenarios and assist operators in efficiently commanding loitering munition, the loitering munition stations is studied from the direction of improving operator situational awareness and a control station system situational display method is designed based on 3D dynamic scene reconstruction and virtual reality(VR).Based on the OpenSceneGraph(OSG) open-source visualization engine, the PageLOD dynamic loading method with quadtree management and pyramid structure is applied to manage and model the elements of the loitering missile mission scenario; an immersive control station verification system is built based on the infinite streaming virtual reality rendering technology; and the loitering munition guidance control test is designed by conducting objective tests on the mission completion time and the number of collisions. By conducting objective tests, statistical questionnaires for subjective analysis, and comparing the effects of the tests with and without immersion, it is verified that the given method is easy to learn and use and can effectively improve the operator's situational awareness.
